Check This One Out

Amazing midcentury-modern home's future is in question | Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Latest News

The report must have hit Harold Prinz right in the gut: "A non-conventional house on a non-conventional lot."

The Federal Housing Administration was flatly denying financing for the modernist architect to build his own dream home.

Standing in the hot sun and gazing at the undeveloped lot at 5016 Maple Springs Blvd., Prinz couldn't help but bite his lip. His wife, Jeanette, remembers squeezing his hand.

Via reader Emily Bennett comes this gorgeous photospread of a wonderful mid-century home in Dallas that almost didn't get built.

Resource: What It Looks Like, What It's Worth

Rago Arts and Auction Center | Results | 2007

Especially for folks new to the mid-century modern world, and even for those somewhat knowledgeable, figuring out what something looks like from a written description, or what something is actually worth, may prove difficult. One way to increase your knowledge is to have in one hand the catalog of a good auction house holding a mid-century sale, and in the other hand, a "prices realized" report.

Or, in this day and age, you can turn to the internet and get it all in one place.

Click the lot numbers on the left of each entry for gorgeous pictures of each sale item.

Saarinen Exibition

The Saarinen influence

The first-ever retrospective exhibition of architect Eero Saarinen's remarkable career is on view at the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills through March 30.
Cranbrook was pretty much ground zero for the American mid-century modern movement. It was here, as instructors, that Saarinen and Charles Eames hatched the ur-designs that would re-shape and re-invent the interiors - and exteriors - of America's homes.

If you live anywhere near Windsor, this would be worth a trip to see.

Un-Predictable!

The Official Predicta Television Site!

No well-dressed up-to-the-minute mid-century modern interior was complete without a Philco Predicta showing the Future Is Now for the anything-but-boobish-tube.

Only problem was the electronics weren't very futuristic at all. Today, though, you can have your electronic cake and eat it, too, with these great updated reproductions of the original Philco gem stuffed with today's latest tele-viewing technology.

No, you won't be able to see the original I Love Lucy shows. On second thought, why not? I'm sure you can watch Nick on these just as easily as the latest flat-screen wall-eater. (Thanks to Mike Hendrix!)

Got 15-25 Million Dollars? Maybe You Could Own This Legendary Mid-Century Modern Home

Kaufmann House - Richard Neutra - Christie’s - Architecture - New York Times

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Oct. 30 — The Kaufmann House, a 1946 glass, steel and stone landmark built on the edge of this desert town by the architect Richard Neutra, has twice been at the vanguard of new movements in architecture — helping to shape postwar Modernism and later, as a result of a painstaking restoration in the mid-1990s, spurring a revived interest in mid-20th-century homes.

Big Surprise!

House & Garden asks:

Which decade's style would you like to see become "in" again:  '50s?  '80s?  '90s?
See if you can guess which one grabs the landslide win....

One question springs to mind: What, precisely, was " '90s style?"

Okay, I'm Tempted

In San Francisco, where I live, this would cost you a minimum of seven figures - or more, depending on the location. You can have this one, though - and a 20 minute drive time (if I recall correctly) to the Chicago Loop - for $213,000. Click the image for more. It's being handled by Joe Kunkel of Jetset Modern, a fave of this blog. Tell him Bill Quick sent you.

Atriums and Vaults and Flows, Oh My!

Here's a nice little essay on the philosophy behind the interior layouts of mid-century residential architecture:

Mid-Century Modern Interiors

When mid-century modern houses were built in the 1950s and 1960s, the most striking feature of their interior was usually their open and flowing floor plan. Living room spaces flowed into the dining room, which flowed into the kitchen. A vaulted ceiling over it all really did make the core of the house one big “great room.” This was, after all, the era of “togetherness.”

Is That What We Are?

Curbed LA: Celebrity Real Estate Wrap: Gossip Star's Mid-Century Modern

1) Legendary gossip columnist (Star magazine) Janet Charlton has listed her David Hyun-designed, five-bedroom Hancock Park home for $2.995 million. But the home, used for numerous TV/film shoots, including Running With Scissors, goes overboard with its mid-century modern decorations to the point that it "looks like a vintage furniture store that caters to hipster doofuses," according to Luxist.com. [Real Estalker]
Hipster "doofuses?" I don't know if I'd go that far....

A Beautiful Home

Jetset - Designs for Modern Living: Modern Interiors features some gorgeous homes. This is one of my favorites:

Welcome to Mid-Century Modern Interiors!

Hi!

Welcome to Mid-Century Modern Interiors.

I confess I started this blog to scratch my own itch, which is my appreciation of the design, architecture, furnishings, art, electronics, and all the rest that made up that remarkable explosion of brilliance and creativity that began in America immediately after the end of WWII and continued for another twelve or so years, say from 1946 to 1958.

The Web is a wonderful place, full of treasures almost too numerous to count, but the problem is finding them. What I hope to do here is to establish a general and wide-ranging repository for all things relating to mid-century interior design, with an emphasis on photographic and video presentations of the interiors, architecture, and popular culture I enjoyed and loved so much.

I will do as much as I can, but I confess, the task will be easier with your help. So I'm asking you for your own contributions, your photos or videos, or your stories and reminiscences of either the past or the present rooms that have made you happy or thrilled you with the descovery of a new way of living, and a new way of looking at the way you live.

Just so you know where I am coming from, here are a couple of snaps of my own living room. I hope you enjoy them!
