Just For the Heck of It

Take a walk down memory lane with this frankly scary video of an early version of Ronald McDonald. I doubt that today's parents would let this guy within a hundred yards of their kids, but these were less paranoid times. And check out the tailfins on the cars in the background!

Willard Scott as Ronald Mc Donald.

That is Willard Scott. He had the local Bozo the Clown franchise in Washington DC in the early 60's and had an ad account with the local McDonalds chains, for whom he developed the Ronald character. McDonalds used another character for the national campaign, but the clip you have here was one of Willard's.

Now all that's missing is a video of the earliest appearance of the Grimace, better known as the Evil Grimace. He wasn't the cuddly, happy swollen purple character that appeared later.

That would be the great Willard Scott as the very first Ronald. What a guy!

Isn't that Willard Scott?
