USA Today Axes Dozens; Marched Out, Email Cut

Up to 70 veteran USA Today journalists, editors, and others were laid off Wednesday, and reports claim that the newly unemployed were “marched out by security” and within 15 minutes had their email accounts shut off.

Dead tree, dying.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. I did some number twiddling in mid 2013 concerning circulation of the major newspapers. Here was the commentary on USA Today:

In the latest numbers, USA Today’s print circulation is down a staggering 12% in just six months.

I think their near monopoly of “free newspaper at hotels” eroded very quickly. I’ve noticed a lot fewer hotels distributing them, the ones that do often have WSJ and/or NYT as alternatives, and there are stacks in the lobby instead of being left at every door. Perhaps a third as many hotels leave a USA Today at the hotel room door as did five or six years ago.

  2. I remember when USA Today just started out. I got my free copies at hotels, and I called it McNews even then.

It never got better. Same old leftist pabulum, with an occasional op-ed that drifted a bit to center.

Is Glenn even in the print version? I assumed he’s online only.
