Gotta Be Somebody’s Fault – Now Pay Me

Workforce Investment Act Leaves Many Jobless and in Debt –

Jarrod Howard, 45, who has been unemployed for two years, recently finished a welding course in nearby Modesto. He said that welders with his skills could earn $60 an hour, but that he would settle for $20 an hour if he were able to stay within 50 miles of the house he shares with his mother.

“I could live on $15 an hour because it is not that expensive to live here, but I’m trying to put away as much money as I can to retire,” he said. “If I ever retire.”

My guess is that a lot of these folks would indeed find work if they were willing to relocate anywhere in the country.  Or at least widen their horizons to finding a job somewhere other than their home town.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. The disease of socialism –

    Frankfurt about 1985:

Me: What does your dad do?
College girl: He is a butcher, but he has not worked in 4 years
    Me: That’s terrible, why not?
College girl: We live in a small town and there are no butcher jobs available
Me: Could he do other work or go to another town?
College girl: No,he is a butcher and he grew up in this town
    Me: Oh, okay
College girl: It is really terrible, he used to buy a new BMW every year, now he can only afford a new Audi every 2 years
