“This Is the Start of a Revolution…”

Metro identifies officers among five killed in northeast Las Vegas ambush | Las Vegas Review-Journal

Two Las Vegas police officers were killed Sunday in an apparent ambush in a pizza restaurant that spilled over to a nearby Walmart store, where the two shooters committed suicide after shooting and killing a woman.

Details are sketchy but sources within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department say the officers were shot by a man and a woman who approached them as they ate lunch at a CiCi’s Pizza, 309 N. Nellis Boulevard, at about 11:20 a.m.

Sheriff Doug Gillespie identified the officers as Alyn Beck, 42, and Igor Soldo, 32. He said no motive for the attack has been determined.

“It’s a tragic day,” the sheriff said. “We have lost two officers with young families.”

There are still many questions whose answers won’t be known immediately, Gillespie said.

There was a time when almost everybody in America reading this story would have been horrified at the murder of two police officers, and uniformly enraged at the murderers.

But after decades of innocents killed by over-armored, no-knocking, over-reaching paramilitary cops far to willing to shoot first and cover up later, that may not be nearly as true as it used to be.

I know, I know. Some of you will tell me I’m blaming the victims. But in fact, I’m just pointing out what the cops themselves have done to their own respect, honor, and standing in their communities. Doubtless a majority still regard the police as the same figures of respect they always have, but a much larger minority no longer do.

And who is to blame for that?

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.
