Unfortunately, We Can’t Impeach Him

Krauthammer’s Take: Obama’s ‘Stonewall Playbook’ Won’t Work on VA Scandal | National Review Online

?While the Obama administration has largely been able to fend off criticism from many of its looming controversies, it won’t be able to do the same with the mismanagement at the Department of Veterans Affairs given the wide scope and various reports and anecdotes of the problem, Charles Krauthammer said on Friday’s Special Report.

In the past, the White House used the “stonewall playbook” of refraining from commenting on scandals by pointing to an ongoing investigations, in which there was largely no other source of outside information and allowed the administration to more feasibly control the narrative. In regards to the VA scandal though, Krauthammer explained that with more and more victims and their families coming forward every day and revealing various examples of malpractice at facilities and hospitals, it makes the situation more difficult for the White House to manage public perception.

Hooey.  It doesn’t matter how many families or victims come forward, the media will give them as little coverage as possible, and Obama will stonewall everything – unless the Senate Democrats beat him to it.

You watch.  Give it a month, and this will be “Dude, that was like a month ago.”

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. Hooey. It doesn’t matter how many families or victims come forward, the media will give them as little coverage as possible, and Obama will stonewall everything….

As I wrote a couple of weeks back, you can’t get leftists to feel shame or embarrassment:

But leftists are now in permanent “deny, deny, deny” mode. Bill Clinton taught them well. If you never admit mistakes or problems, you effectively reduce your opponents to sputtering frustration. If you never show shame or embarrassment no matter how silly you look, it’s never necessary to admit that your opponents have any valid points whatsoever.

The only thing you need is the willing cooperation of the legacy media…

Obama will just keep that “world class intellect” mask on (which looks to me more like the student who is clueless about the class subject matter, but is determined not to let the teacher know it). He will never admit that he has done anything wrong. Jay Carney will spew the most outrageous nonsense, and the press will fidget a while and then swallow it.

I think that the members of the media with some connection to reality sense that the level of dissatisfaction in the citizenry has the potential to cause a phase change in our politics. But they’re sure as hell not going to let it happen on Obama’s watch if they can help it. They have too much of their own self-image invested in getting him elected and re-elected, not to mention spending about all they had left of their credibility.

  2. Obama is a determined and successful political entrepreneur. He has lived a theory of popular politics which has delivered power to him.

    (1) Say anything you want to present your programs and support your ends. If people object or call you a shameless liar, don’t ignore them. Point out that they are the false opposition, motivated by racism, hatred, self interest, and a desire to take over the government. Don’t smile at the irony.

    (2) It is your word as President against theirs as the lesser-elected. A majority of the public will give you the benefit of the doubt.

    (3) If you don’t confess a wrong, a majority of the public will not judge you as wrong. Even if their reasoning tells them that you are wrong, they are not used to following their reason, and they don’t trust themselves. They will trust you as the President rather than their own confused minds.

Obama observed a powerful fact. Most people do not form an opinion, they observe and parrot opinions. If the press supports you, people hear the party line from many sources. They are not skeptical that what they hear is identical from these sources. They notice only that the sources agree, and this exact agreement reinforces their opinion.

Other politicians may have noticed this, but they didn’t take the chance of relying on it. Obama has forcefully followed this theory to victory.

Obama’s schemes are repeatedly revealed by the opposition. He says “What do you expect from opposition by Republicans?” Obama says that mistakes may have been made, but the opposition is exaggerating for pure political benefit. The press reports that nothing has been proven. The small part of the press in opposition is smeared as “Fox News” and as owned by the Republicans. Obama doesn’t smile at the irony.

There is an historical example of another amazingly successful politician who took power over an enlightened, industrial country in 10 years: Hitler.

The public assumes that no administration would lie outright and often. Obama depends on that conventional wisdom. People will just not believe that everything they are told is a convenient lie. That is unimaginable to them as decent people.

Adolf Hitler:  [edited]  The more monstrous the conspiracy, the less likely it will be uncovered.

There is always a certain credibility in the big lie. The broad masses of a nation have simple, primitive minds. They more readily believe the big lie than the small lie. They often tell small lies in little matters, but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.

It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they do not believe that others would have the impudence to do so. You may bring the facts that prove the lie clearly to their minds. They will still doubt and waver, and they will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.
