Already beleaguered by illness of every kind imaginable, including a horrific AIDS crisis, Putin’s Russia is not prepared to sustain the type of draconian cuts to pensions and social services that are clearly now in the offing. A major demographic debacle is inevitable.
What can’t go on, won’t go on. The U.S.S.R. wasn’t able to go on, and so it collapsed. The neofascist regime that replaced it, still enamored of central control of everything, is also reaching the tipping point, and won’t go on much longer, either.
But for the pale imitation of control-freak Putin currently occupying the White House, America would be in much better shape than it is. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with the mini-Putin for another three years, and at least a year more of his Politburo Party in control of the Senate.
The way things are going with Obama and the Democrats, though, I’m beginning to think they are the ones who can’t go on – and therefore won’t.
