Hey, We’re Really, Really Sorry We Tried to Join the National Gun-Grabber Journo-Jihad!

Alphecca, by Jeff Soyer » NC: Newspaper Apologizes For CCW Records Request

A local newspaper in North Carolina makes a formal request for the records of all CCW permit holders. The Sheriff denies their request. After an outcry from others, the newspaper withdraws its request and apologizes:

The Cherokee Scout made a tremendous error in judgment this week, and thanks to our readers we learned a tough lesson.

As publisher of your local newspaper, I want to apologize to everyone we unintentionally upset with our public records request for a list of those who have or have applied for a concealed carry permit. We had no idea the reaction it would cause.

Okay, let’s unravel this steaming pile of merde (merde is French for “shit,” and French shit is the sort most favored by the statist left). First, this is a news outlet. A home of (purported) journalism. In other words, a factory dedicated to discovering, following, and reporting the news.

There have been several high profile cases of newspapers “reporting” state-gathered data about either licensed gun owner, or possessors of concealed carry permits, most notably the recent case of New York’s Journal-News info-dump:

New York newspaper removes gun permit database from website after outcry | Fox News

A suburban New York newspaper that outraged gun owners by posting the names and addresses of residents with handgun permits removed the information from its website Friday.

“Outrage” well describes the reaction to this national news story. Where was the Cherokee-Scout when this was a noisy national controversy? Hiding under a rock? Of course it wasn’t.  What really happened was that some lefty, gun-grabbing moron at that rag (my guess is an editor), operating on the notion that there was no such thing as bad publicity, decided to see if it could do a concern-troll for national attention by duplicating the Journal-News‘ efforts.

And when they were rebuffed by the cops, somebody else at the rag (my guess is the owner)  thought – Holy shit.  Did we just avoid stepping in it big time or what?

So we get a phony apology.  But don’t permit that to blind you to what they originally tried to do, and to what they will doubtless try to do in the future along the same gun-grabbing lines.

I think an advertising boycott of that rag is in order.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.
