Xiaomi Mi4 review: China’s iPhone killer is unoriginal but amazing | Ars Technica

On the inside, everything in the Mi4 is top shelf. It has a quad core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801, 3GB of RAM, 16 or 64GB (!) of internal storage, a 3080mAh battery, and best of all, no silly gimmicks. Everything that is here is here for a reason; it works. Xiaomi even managed to out-spec-sheet Samsung’s Galaxy S5 with more RAM (3GB vs 2GB) and a bigger battery (3080mAh vs 2800 mAh). A Galaxy S5 costs $700 unlocked, but the MSRP on a Mi4 is only about $320 (1999 Yuan).

Xiaomi doesn’t do business in America, and it can never seem to make enough devices to meet demand.

I expect that when  the big carriers stop subsidizing phone sales, companies like Xiaomi will start eating Apple and Samsung’s lunch, because the market for six hundred dollar smartphones out of pocket will not be large enough to support the Big Two’s current market shares.

My guess is Apple will start lobbying for trade barriers, claiming unfair competition from Chinese companies.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. Be interesting to see what happens.

But they’re already giving up the subsidies. Right now Sprint is pushing hard what they call Easy Pay, which is “$200 down, $25 a month for 24 months” a.k.a. the unsubsidized price. (I’m rounding the numbers.)

Be interesting to see how those are selling compared to the subsidies.
