When Did This Happen?
Bill Quick

When I was a kid, we went back to school after Labor Day, toward the end of the first week in September.

They’re showing a report on the television right now about Bay Area kids returning to school today.

Has it been this way for a long time?

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. It seems to be that they are starting earlier and earlier every year, what with snow days, teacher in service days, my vagina stinks days, etc and the minimum number of days they need to be in class.

  2. I went to school at the end of September, and summer vacation began the last days of May or the first couple in June. Christmas and Spring vacations were three weeks long. I did not go to a public school (ever). Sometimes a suspicious shopkeeper would ask me “why aren’t you in school?” How much I loved this.
