Republicans Look for Revenge Against Ted Cruz as 2016 Looms – TIME

By all accounts, Cruz’s push to shut down the government did not play well with business and corporate donors. “He’s the last person Wall Street would give money to,” says a big Republican donor. “They’re more interested in a Chris Christie or Jeb Bush.

In other words, GOP “big donors” are more interested in losing with a mediocre pile of moderate mush than winning with a Reagan-style conservative candidate.

Well, we knew that already.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. “In other words, GOP “big donors” are more interested in losing with a mediocre pile of moderate mush than winning with a Reagan-style conservative candidate.”

That has worked for them before; see Bush, George W. So they are no doubt thinking they can win with moderate mush, especially post-Obama. Otherwise, I can’t see why they would spend the money (unless they’re greasing both sides of the skid).

But they see no advantage whatsoever in promoting a Cruz candidacy. As Glenn would say, “Not enough opportunity for graft.” They don’t believe in the free market principles espoused by Cruz. They believe in using their money to buy power to get even more money, and lock in market dominance so they don’t have to worry about upstart competition.

Cruz doesn’t look like he has any interest in that game, so they don’t want him. For some of them, it’s even worse: their current crony capitalist arrangement could be derailed under Cruz, so they actively oppose him. They would rather have a Democrat than someone who really believes in the free market.
