National Spelling Bee ends in tie for first time in decades – CNN.com

(CNN) — Sriram Hathwar and Ansun Sujoe correctly spelled so many words Thursday that the Scripps National Spelling Bee had to declare them both winners.

Why? Because there weren’t enough words left on the competition’s list for them to keep facing off until only one was left standing.

In the bee’s final round, Hathwar, 14, an eighth-grader from Painted Post, New York, correctly spelled the word “stichomythia” — dialogue especially of altercation delivered by two actors.

Sujoe, 13, a seventh-grader from Fort Worth, Texas, correctly spelled the word “feuilleton” — part of a European newspaper.

But we can’t expect illegal immigrants – or legal ones, for that matter – to have to learn English.  Because that would be racist.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. Bill, expecting all immigrants (or children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of immigrants) to learn English is racist. You’re such a racist that you missed the most important part: do either of those winners’ names look Hispanic? No, of course not. All right-thinking (that is, left-thinking) people know that Hispanics just aren’t smart enough to learn English. All proper right- (left-)thinking progressives show how non-racist they are by recognizing the limitations of certain racial* or cultural groups, and then making sure that racists like you don’t expect too much of them.

    * Term used as a shortcut. All left-thinking people realize that there is no such thing as race, and that “race” is merely a construct of white men to justify slavery, and that all people are equal, though white men such as yourself are less equal than others.

  2. Like George Zimmerman and Thomas Sowell, who are either really “white” or not “true black” respectively, those “immigrants” who learn English are not truly of their race, ethnicity, gender, or immigrant group and do not enjoy any minority privilege. To a leftist they have been “bleached” white.

Just because they won’t “tow the line” and act all victimized. (DYSWIDT?).

  3. There were two races last week in Ketchikan (lies, all lies). A footrace in which the participants ‘toed the line’ at the start, and another where the tugboats towed the line to the end.

  4. Upon reflection, and working with a fairly small number because it is a convoluted process and difficult to navigate, I would rather live in a neighborhood composed of only new, recent, legal citizens than the first 200 names in the Boston phone book.

Third generation, maybe not so much…but a lot of that is familiarity breeding contempt.

  5. I initially thought they were probably home-schooled, but then found:

Hathwar … is an eighth-grade student at the Alternative School for Math and Science in Corning. … Sujoe … is a seventh-grade student at
Bethesda Christian School in Fort Worth, Texas.

Who could imagine that math/science or (gasp) Christian students are taught to spell polysyllabic words?
