Average Americans Think They’re Smarter Than the Average American – NationalJournal.com

Forget being smarter than a fifth-grader. Most Americans think they’re smarter than everyone else in the country.

Fifty-five percent of Americans think that they are smarter than the average American, according to a new survey by YouGov, a research organization that uses online polling. In other words, as YouGov cleverly points out, the average American thinks that he or she is smarter than the average American.

That’s because they’ve been told for decades that everybody is “equal,” and they’re dumb enough to believe it.

Check out my new bestseller, Lightning Fall: A Novel of Disaster. Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit.com says: “Bill Quick has authored a terrific thriller that is also an all too plausible warning. Highly recommended!” Available in Kindle e-book or trade paperback formats.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. None of this is meaningful unless you define ‘average’. It’s possible for 55% of the population to have, say, an IQ that is above the arithmetic mean IQ, or the modal IQ. It is not possible for 55% of the population to have an IQ above the median, by definition.

  2. Also yes.

I was reacting to the implicit “haha, those fools think that more than half the population can be above average”, when that’s totally possible if you’re talking about the mean or the mode. I sometimes joke that I have a larger than average number of limbs, which is arguably true if you’re computing the mean. In fact, most people have more than the average number of limbs.
