CPAC 2014: Rand Paul Wins the Straw Poll, as Marco Rubio’s Support Collapses

The actual CPAC straw poll was, for the fifth time, dominated by young libertarians. No surprise: 78 percent disapproved of “NSA’s use of data collection.” Some kind of surprise: 41 percent wanted to legalize marijuana, 21 percent wanted just medical marijuana legalized, and only 33 percent wanted it to remain illegal. That spoiled the results of the straw poll, which I’ve written below, parenthetically noting the results from 2013.

Weasel Dave Weigel is apparently surprised (I dunno how else to interpret the hairball chunk of gibberish he hocked up in the above paragraph) to find that the same young libertarians who support Rand Paul also favor legalizing pot by a plurality, or a clear majority if medical weed is included.

This was a guy the juicebox mafia journojizzers touted as an “expert” on the thinking of the right.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. hairball chunk of gibberish

Oh, good. I’m glad you said that. I’d read the last sentence of that chunk of, um, prose and had difficulty comprehending it and was wondering if I’m tired or under-caffeinated or just getting old and stupid. Not that your evaluation rules out the other three, of course.

    Libertarians* espousing – libertarian ideas/principles…how – utterly, totally UN-remarkable…

A true Master of the Overstated Obvious. Weigel must be one of those blivets that uses the phrase “it goes without saying” just before describing something in exhaustive, meticulous detail.

What, you didn’t get the official Libertarian tattoo on your ass? Is that because you were too much of a candy-ass (so to speak) or did they deem you not ideologically pure enough?

(I was going to get the Anarchist Steering Committee tattoo on my ass, but there wasn’t enough room, what with all the “Property of” tattoos my wife had put there. Man, she gets possessive sometimes.)
