The Kremlin is Terra Incognita for Western diplomats in Kiev.
I’m seeing headlines like this sprouting up all over the place, and they all push the same theme: How could anybody be expected to understand or predict Putin’s actions, since the man is obviously insane?
This is, of course, the line being pushed by the White House and Obama supporters. It has the same charming ring I’ve heard before, right after 9/11, for instance: “How could we have imagined something like this? Those people are crazy1″
It’s a smokescreen to cover up yet another lapse of leadership. Rather than admit that Obama was stupid, ignorant, and gutless when it came to containing Russia, we have to say, “Well, his international policy was as perfect a piece of genius as it could possibly be – after all, he’s Barack Obama, the God-King – but how could even he succeed in the face of so much craziness?
As if Putin is behaving any differently than every other Russian dictator going back to the days of the Czars. I remember the triumphalism under the Clinton administration, when we were going to spend the Peace Dividend on a zillion different things. At the time, I thought, “Maybe we should spend some of it on the military anyway…just in case.”
But, you know, of course that was just crazy talk. Funny how anything lefties in America don’t like is crazy. Or racist. Or both.
This whole “Putin is insane” is solely for domestic political consumption, of course. Putin isn’t paying any attention to it. He’s barely paying any attention to Obama. This is all designed to cover up the horrendous mess Obama has made of our international position.
