MICHAEL BARONE: Concealed-weapons laws have changed America regardless of national debate on gun control.

Back in 1987, some people, myself included, worried that such laws would lead to frequent shootouts on the streets arising from traffic altercations and the like.

Barone is ostensibly a conservative, but what he really is, is a center-right member of the Ruling Class.  His distaste for the plain language of the Second Amendment does not stem from ideology, but from utilitarian belief in the wisdom of the Ruling Class – hey, if we didn’t know better than you, we wouldn’t be the Ruling Class, right?

And while he has reluctantly been goaded by reality into somewhat altering his beliefs about firearms in the hands of the people, he still can’t quite bring himself to acknowledge that there has been a demonstrable good in expanding access to the right guaranteed by the second – to wit, a drop in violent crime.

You see, an armed society is much less malleable to the dictats of those professing a ruling ideology.  More bluntly, an armed society is always a potential threat to their power and authority.

In America, they’ve found themselves somewhat stymied by the stubborn refusal of the bitter-clinginig people to renounce their right to keep and bear arms, and so, since they’ve been unable to bamboozle the people into changing the power  balance by disarming themselves, they’ve set about changing it from the other side – with the creation of a vast National Police State trained to regard the people as terrorists, and armed with equipment that once was seen only in the hands of warfighting military.  Thus they try to adjust the balance in their favor.

Hitler’s Gestapo carried Lugers – a .32 caliber weapon – and they didn’t have SWAT teams.  They didn’t need them, because Hitler had adjusted the power balance the other way by disarming the people.  If you have a .32 automatic pistol, and the other guy doesn’t, you have a huge power advantage.

Here, Americans do have powerful handguns and rifles, and so the cops have tanks, armor, and war-fighting armaments.  The Ruling Elites know that arrangement isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly better than facing the People on an equal footing.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.
