The National Security Agency is collecting less than 30 percent of all Americans’ call records because of an inability to keep pace with the explosion in cellphone use, according to current and former U.S. officials.
First, my default position is to assume they are lying. We know they lie constantly, whenever they are forced to reveal anything at all about what they do. If you assume they are lying, you’ll be right far more often than you are wrong.
Second – what is so reassuring about only 30 percent?
Admitted, I’ve become resigned to that number rising to 100 percent, but that doesn’t mean I’m very happy or very reassured about it. Total information gathered via ubiquitous surveillance will be the primary tool of tyranny, now and into the future.
That is definitely not a cheerful thought.
