About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

      • I said “stickler” because of the historic tendencies of Mandarin speakers to look down on Cantonese speakers as not speaking true Chinese. Beijing natives are particularly prone to this.

And I have Mandarin-speaking friends who have corrected my Cantonese holiday wishes with a distinctly sniffy tone.

To which I reply: Nǐ tā mā de. Although I do smile when I say it.

        Happy holidays!

        • Ah, but I’m not Chinese. I’m American. As such, I am perfectly entitled to look down on all Chinese, regardless of place of origin or preferred language.

(Way I see it, and I mean “see” as both “observe” and “conclude”, most of the Chinese immigrants here look down their noses at Americans and American culture. Turn-about’s fair play. Conceded, this is purely anecdotal, but it’s impossible not to notice.)
