59% Favor Assault Weapons Ban; 18% Want Handgun Ban, Too – Rasmussen Reports™

Most voters still favor a ban on semi-automatic and assault-type weapons but strongly oppose outlawing handguns in the United States. Seven-out-of-10 would feel safer living a neighborhood where individuals could own a gun for self-defense.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 59% of Likely U.S. Voters think there should be a ban on the purchase of semi-automatic and assault-type weapons. Thirty-three percent (33%) disagree.

This is the most depressing bit of news I’ve seen so far this year.

Of course we’re not very far into the year yet, and I’m sure something worse is just over the horizon.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. Pro-gun people should stop using the term “semi-automatic” rifle or handgun. Ignorant people do not like the idea of automatic killing, and semi-automatic doesn’t seem much better to them.

The politically desireable term is “single shot, small caliber, repeating” rifle or handgun. Even better, all pictures of such weapons should have a cowboy hat in the corner, to suggest the virtues of self defense on the lonesome prairie.

I am not being sarcastic. The Left knows the value of using nice names for terrible things (“socialized healthcare”). Gun owners should join in with a nice name for a good thing.

    • I’d make one change: Small caliber single shot repeater.

You’re right. Substituting “repeater” or “repeating” for “automatic” makes all the difference in the world.

Of course, the usage will never catch on among actual, you know, gunners, but….
