On Sunday, The Washington Post reported on its front page “Democratic Party feeling heat from a revived left.” They rarely acknowledge the Democrats have an ideological base, and almost never use the word “liberal” to describe it.
Reporter Zachary Goldfarb did use the word “liberal” routinely, but when you want to push something really leftist, you aren’t getting extreme, you are growing more “populist.” The more leftist you get, the more you appeal to the people?
Well, yes, of course.
Marxism – which is what the American left really espouses, has always billed itself as the religion of the masses. Marxism is populism. How can it be anything else?
At least as far as the Marxists are concerned.
These are the same people who view right-wing populist movements like the Tea Party as being wholly illegitimate, astroturf creations of the one percenters who finance and direct them. The only true populism that can exist is the Marxist variety, because it is the only populism actually concerned with The People themselves.
