Does anybody else have déjà vu? How many times do we have to hear the President give a speech pleading for reform while his administration continues to deport record numbers of people? How many times will the President blame the Republicans for every problem with our immigration system in one sentence and then say we need bipartisanship in the next? How many times will the President blame everybody but his administration for our destructive immigration system?
One of the primary places where I part company with orthodox Libertarianism is the Big L insistence on open borders. They regard the primary mover of that argument as being one of freedom of travel, and hence a matter of civil liberty.
In this, they are fools. Nations exist because they have borders inside of which they function. An area without borders is not a nation. The Libertarians seem unable to grasp this simple fact, nor gain any appreciation for the follow-on issues that directly affect them, primarily that any nation that destroys its own borders will lose internal control over its own governance. The result is anarchy. Big Libertarians often proclaim that they are not anarchists, but I’ll take them seriously when they stop pushing policies that lead directly to a state of anarchy.
