In today’s State of Clout, governments generally only move when they are bribed by somebody to do so. In this case, taxi companies, battening on state-defined monopolies, are kicking back big money to municipalities to make sure the moat they’ve bought from local governments remains wide, deep, and impassable.
OTOH, there is nothing the corruptocrats like better than a bidding war, and so, in the manner of criminals who won’t stay bought, the unspoken message to Uber, Lyft, and the rest are, “That’s a pretty nice business you got there. Be a shame if anything happened to it…and the line for unmarked brown envelopes stuffed with cash starts right over there.”
Some moron in the comments at Glenn’s place had a hernia over this, shrieking that giving people the choice of using “Gypsy cabs” like these new companies was dangerous because they weren’t firmly gripped in the loving iron fist of government control.
Never mind that such choices should be up to consumers, not government. This sort of unhinged lust for the whip of Big Nanny statism (for our own good, of course, of course) is why we live in an authoritarian, totalitarian tyranny today.
