NEWS YOU CAN USE: 40 Things Every Self-Respecting Man Over 30 Should Own. I’ve got most of ‘em. I don’t carry a leather wallet, though.
I do. It was a gift, it’s Cartier, and I’ve carried it for nearly thirty years.
This is the first time I’ll looked at one of these lists and found that I own every single item on it. I don’t, however, find that so extraordinary for a man of my age. Forty years ago, a list like this wouldn’t even have been necessary, since most men owned this stuff – yeah, even the bar sets (it was the men who mixed the cocktails back then, before drinking became one of the cardinal cultural sins). As for that kitchen knife, while males were not notably heavy duty in the kitchen, they did need a chunk of sharp steel for slicing off great hunks of steak for barbecuing – back before eating meat became one of the cardinal cultural sins).
And so on. Anyway, my first reaction to the list was, “What? Why do we need it.”
Then I considered the emasculated, feminized, juvenile male culture of today, and I understood the need perfectly.
Men of a certain age will instinctively understand this list. But men raised by women, in the absence of men, won’t. Because their mothers will mostly have no notion that men need any of this stuff.
