I.e. any Republican who votes to bring the House’s defunding bill to the Senate floor is actually voting to fund ObamaCare. That’s the messaging that “defund” supporters are stuck with right now.
Allahpundit, Head Gasser at Hot Farts, knows better.
This “vote for cloture, vote against the bill” scam is one that both factions of the Ruling Party use constantly to hoodwink the voters.
In simple terms: It takes 60 votes to end debate (invoke cloture) and bring a bill to a vote on the floor. It only takes 51 votes to pass or amend a bill. If a bill has, say, 52 sure votes but no more, it can be stopped by defeating the cloture motion to bring it to the floor, which only takes 41 votes. But once it comes to the floor, it is guaranteed, by virtue of having a majority of 51, of passage (along with whatever amendments are applied to it – and stripping the Obamacare defunding would be one such amendment).
Fine, Cruz seems to be saying; if they want me to be the main obstacle to a “clean” CR rather than John Boehner, I’ll try to block it in the Senate even if it means doing something as awkward as filibustering a House bill I support. But it’ll fail and he knows it, and Boehner will be back on the hot seat soon enough. What he’s doing here is simply showing that he’s willing to take some heat himself before Reid’s scheme succeeds and the spotlight shifts back to the House.
Here’s what pragmatic, soul-less political bean counters like AP never seem to get: The GOP has to be seen to fight with all its might against Obamacare, or it is doomed to irrelevance with its base.
And there is a fight here to be made. It had to be made in the House first, where Boehner and his gang of chumps had to be defeated in order to pass a CR defunding the implementation of Obamacare. It will have to be made in the Senate, against not only Harry Reid and his gang of progtards, but against Ruling Party hacks like John McCain. And then, when Reid does finally manage to get his pro-Obamacare funding resolution passed, that resolution will have to be fought and defeated in the House – as many times as it takes to force Obama either to surrender, or shut down the government.
The point of all this is to make as much noise as possible, to make it absolutely clear to an American public that despises Obamacare that it is the Republicans who are fighting tooth and nail to get rid of it, and it is Obama and the Democrats who are willing to shut down the government in order to cram Obamacare down the throats of the American people who hate it.
But that hatred has to be stoked and nurtured, so that it is burning most brightly during the days when the government is closed by Obama’s actions, and so that the growing clamor from America is for the Democrats to stop trying to blackmail the people into accepting Obamacare, which they hate. And if that clamor grows loud enough, Obama will fold and Obamacare will die.
But in order for that to happen, Americans need to understand that it is Obama who is shutting down the government to force them to accept Obamacare. That’s what all the sound and fury is about. That is the sort of political theater necessary to play, and win, the long game.
But all AP can do is count beans. Like all those of his ilk who seem to think losing quietly is always preferable than going down fighting in a glorious (short term) defeat.
AP would of course be totally befuddled by statements like “Give me liberty or give me death!”
“You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children’s children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.”
Hey, Hot Farts! It’s not all beans. Sometimes you just have to fight because it’s the right thing, the only thing, to do.
And here’s the kicker that folks like AP never seem to understand: If the House steadfastly refuses to fund Obamacare, then Obamacare will die. It doesn’t matter what the Senate does, or what the President does. In fact, their only option is to punish the American people for refusing to knuckle under to the tyranny of Obamacare.
And despite all the smelly gas issuing from Hot Farts, that’s a battle I don’t mind waging at all.
