If all of this doesn’t lead to the loss of federal funds, then critics of the Obama White House may add a new entry to the list of laws—the Affordable Care Act, the No Child Left Behind Act, and laws governing drug possession, illegal immigrants, and the disposal of nuclear waste—that the administration ignores or rewrites on the fly. Only such intervention, it now seems, can keep the illusion of California’s high-speed rail project alive.
So, of course those interventions will be done by the totally lawless Obama administration, not to mention the lawless California government. To think otherwise is to demonstrate naivete on a massive scale, which opponents of the bullet – well, partly bullet – train seem to be doing at the moment.
A more accurate appraisal does, indeed, belong to the California Boodler-in-Chief, Jerry Brown: “It’s no big deal.”
Well, actually, it is: To the boodlers, at least, who are looking at massive paydays as far as the eye can see. Which is why some pathetic objections from courts about the law will be swept aside as the petty barriers they actually are.
