Waffle House is, bar-none, the best restaurant chain in America. Aside from being an American institution in certain parts of the country, its food – those hash browns, those burgers – may be topped by other chains, but the fact is, pound-for-pound, there exists no other place like Waffle House. For me, Whataburger is a distant second.
I was at a Gothelbees [if you're confused, certain Applebee's stores are populated by servers who wear all black, are heavily pierced and tattooed, etc, and this is far more common than you can possible realize] and my server brought up Waffle House, and we went back/forth regarding z’Haus.
The Girl was amazed by my understanding of Waffle House. I was in, well The North, where Waffle House isn’t a thing. She didn’t get that in my part of the country, Waffle House isn’t a rare thing, it’s normal. I dated a girl who lived a mile from a Waffle House, and whether she realized it or not, our Sunday routine was to wake, dress, and drive to the Waffle House.
We didn’t have a Waffle House in Muncie, but I seem to recall there was one in Anderson, fifteen miles away or so. There are none in California, which tells you everything you need to know about the Golden State.
