Lavabit, email service Snowden reportedly used, abruptly shuts down – Boing Boing

Remember when word circulated that Edward Snowden was using Lavabit, an email service that purports to provide better privacy and security for users than popular web-based free services like Gmail? Lavabit’s owner has shut down service, with a mysterious message posted on the lavabit.com home page today. Below, the full message:

Privacy? You ain’t got no stinking privacy.

Now shut up.

(And by the way: We’ll do the same to any entity that aids the Traitor Snowden in any way. Because we can. Well, except for…damn that Vladimir Putin!)

  1. It gets worse: Silent Circle Preemptively Shuts Down Encrypted Email Service To Prevent NSA Spying

    The company says:

    Email that uses standard Internet protocols cannot have the same security guarantees that real-time communications has. There are far too many leaks of information and metadata intrinsically in the email protocols themselves. Email as we know it with SMTP, POP3, and IMAP cannot be secure.

    [...]

    We see the writing [on] the wall, and we have decided that it is best for us to shut down Silent Mail now. We have not received subpoenas, warrants, security letters, or anything else by any government, and this is why we are acting now.

    We’ve been debating this for weeks, and had changes planned starting next Monday. We’d considered phasing the service out, continuing service for existing customers, and a variety of other things up until today. It is always better to be safe than sorry, and with your safety we decided that the worst decision is always no decision.

    I work for a SaaS provider that handles data on temporary and contract labor for major companies, including non-US companies. I wonder if our sales team has been getting pushback from prospective overseas customers who are getting cold feet about signing up with us because they’re concerned about NSA spying.
