Classical Values – End the culture war by restoring classical values

During a golf game recently, the president of Bowdoin College hit up a prominent philanthropist for money and the man refused, calling Bowdoin “a ridiculous liberal school that brings all the wrong students to campus for all the wrong reasons.” After that, the philanthropist was castigated by the president as a knuckle-dragging troglodyte, who had dared (gasp!) to express disapproval of “diversity” as it is now practices.

“A ridiculous liberal school that brings all the wrong students to campus for all the wrong reasons.”

That’s a keeper!

It is also the perfect characterization of dozens, if not hundreds, of these small liberal arts academies dotting the American countryside. As Eric points out, these extremely expensive educational baubles are essentially scams, trading worthless degrees and heavy leftwing indocrination for family life savings and crushing debt, while smarmily patting themselves on their collective, and collectivist, backs for teaching “the right stuff.”

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. I wonder what a certain Bowdoin alumnus/faculty member/president, who was also a Phi Beta Kappa/Medal of Honor awardee/state governor, would think of his alma mater today?

    Fix bayonets!

  2. I trace at least part of the problem with bogus "educations" back to the government. There's the direct government interference in the form of sexual and ethnic quotas-that-aren't-called-quotas and there are frivolous lawsuits over firings, most of which the goverment judges should throw out with prejudice. Both of these lead executives and HR departments to use "objective" critera in hiring and firing decisions, and what's more objective than a sheepskin from an accredited college?

  3. Hmmph. Well, we can see that you’ve never worked in the HR department of a large corporation. A degree is a degree, and it’s something you can point to when regulators and watchdogs and agencies letting bids are breathing down your neck.

I’m loathe to say anything good about HR weenies, but I know something about the government bullshit they have to put up with. I wasn’t being flippant in my previous comment. Bitterly cynical, more like.

    • But aren’t HR departments the place an applicant goes to be screened out? They’re useful only for people who must perform a job search to keep their unemployment checks coming. The way to get hired is to get a word put in for you to a higher up who can hire you outside the HR process. Besides, a degree is no longer indicative of ability to do any job, and it’s expensive to hire someone only to let them go when they prove unable to earn their pay. Even HR departments know that by now. They must use degrees to suggest what unpaid apprenticeship applicants can volunteer for.
