Why Obama Wins: Democrats Purge Moderates, Republicans Purge Conservatives

Wednesday’s headlines provide an important lesson in the difference in strategy between the two political parties. In Chicago, the Obama operation quashed former Rep. Debbie Halvorson, who enjoyed an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, in favor of anti-gun radical Robin Kelly, who openly declared her intention to become a “leader” in “banning guns.” In Washington, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) met privately with President Barack Obama and praised his efforts for “comprehensive” immigration reform.

Note the distinction. Democrats are preparing for a major nationwide fight on the gun issue by purging the party’s moderates–including the very candidates it cultivated in 2006 and 2008 to win seats in conservative districts. Republicans are preparing for a major debate on immigration reform by purging the party’s conservatives, casting opponents of bipartisan legislative efforts as bigots who will doom the party to ongoing electoral failure.

Well, sure. The Democrats want to win. The GOP Faction of the Ruling Party merely wants the winners (whom they assure will be and remain winners via their idiotic strategy of premptive surrender) to like them well enough to let them keep their snouts wedged deeply into the boodle trough.

Offering friendship to your political enemies is akin to offering compromise to Muslims: It only inflames them to rape you more fiercely. And the GOP Faction has been in the barrel for nearly a century.

You’d think they’d get tired of a hundred years of being butt-fucked, but apparently not.

Why so harsh? Well, we liberty-minded conservatives know that the GOP Faction understands very well how to fight hard, down, dirty, without quarter, and with a single-minded focus on total victory, giving and accepting no quarter whatsoever. They’ve done it to us often enough, and they’ve been very good at it.

But they never pull out the same long knives against the Democrats. Why not? Because they don’t regard the Democrats as the enemy. They regard conservatives as the enemy, because minor factional disagreements within the Ruling Party are far less important than presenting a united front against what they all view as the barbarians at the gate, the unwashed, crude, stupid, bitter, clinging, “Gun-Toting Tea Party Psychotards.” We conservatives, in other words.

Time we started treating them the same way, I think.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. The Long March through the institutions. Well, the GOP is just another institution. We think they are just opportunists willing to put their personal interests ahead of their constituents and the country itself. What if they were just really on the other side? What would they be doing differently if they were?

That is the nail right on the head. Thanks Mr Quick
