About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. The wife decided that we needed new sheets.  Seemed like too soon to me, since I couldn't see through the old sheets yet, but you know how womens be.  Unreasonable at times.  Best just to go along to get along.

I drive her to the mall, since this is evidently something that can't be handled online.  Seems like you have to feel them before buying them.  Who knew?  She points like a bird dog and is off.  I do what I do, mainly hang around with a dumb look, so as to blend in.

I noticed a couple of things.  One: damnme they gots mall cops.  I saw five different pairs of gun-thugs giving shoppers the stink-eye.  Well, I guess they know their shopper-base better than I do.  Two:  It took me a little to figure out what was bothering me about the crowd…not one in ten was carrying a shopping bag.  I counted.  Lots o' folks, just not lots of buyers.

    It's probably nothing.

    • Rule Of Thumb: When the Economy, she is bad, the Mall-Visitors, they are Shop Much (passes the time, plus free indoor exercise…) but they are Buy Little (no cash, and, after awhile, not much credit…)

Second Rule Of Thumb: When the Economy, she is bad, the Shoplifting, she is trending upward – and the Rent-A-Cop, he is making lots of Overtime Pay…

(Rules formulated while <strike>surviving</strike> somewhat-prospering as a "hired gun" through a couple of recessions/near-depressions many moons ago at various locations in MI)

But then, you probably already knew all that, right?

  2. No, unfortunately, everything is set up, and the transfer ticket was submitted Tuesday evening, but nothing has been moved yet. I’m hoping to see some action today – their FAQs say these moves should take 24-72 hours.

  3. I try not to complain about the free ice cream, but…

I check in several times a day, and I use the comments links at the top to see where I last read. So I can use the 2 shades of blue to tell which links I’ve already visited.

Now they’re red. One shade of red, whether I visited already or not.

It’s not the end of the world, but it is a minor inconvenience.

  4. Red State Rising: Let’s hope the trend grows.

Alaska is well on its way to outlawing the inforcement of federal gun control measures. I don’t know how many other states are doing the same. But I would hope that many will follow and then use these actions as a prototypical means of thwarting the federal overreach in other areas.

  5. Just read the Washington Post article on Rand Paul’s filibuster
He noted all the men that helped him during his talk. I thought I would list them. Not all were equal in their support but, damn, they deserve to be remembered:

    Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah)
    Sen Ted Cruz (R-Tex.)
    Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.)
    Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.)
    Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)

  6. Bill, any progress on migrating the site to a new hosting company? Performance is getting really sluggish. About 30 seconds to load the site and 20 to open comments just now. I know patience is a virtue, but, dang it, I wanna read my DP faster!

    • The new host is acting about as incompetently as Bluehost. They told me the transfer would be “24-72 hours…or longer.” Well, it’s going on five days now, and I’m about ready to cancel and look for something else.

I personally think Bluehost is trying to force me out. I’m sorry about the speed. I’m doing everything I can.

  7. Tnaks, NC! Still tweaking things a little bit – my httpd server keeps going down a few times a day and we haven’t yet figured out why – but I think we’ve got an auto-restart program installed that brings it back up in a couple of minutes. I’m keeping an eye on it, though. Otherwise, yes. Things seem smooth and fast. What a relief after years of struggling with ever-deteriorating service from the execrable Bluehost, which is only suitable for tinkertoy sites that nobody reads or uses.

  8. Yah, I agree with genes: the comment and post editors suck Michelle Obama balls. Most of the shortcomings are minor nuisances, but if I copy/paste from a different site, the formatting comes into the text box and there’s no way to edit the formatting that I can figure out except to save the comment and then edit it afterward.

I’d thought that some of my bazillion browser plugins might be interfering with editing widgets, but after genes complained I figured it wasn’t just me.

  9. Okay, I think I've figured out how to address the problems with the comment editor.

I've added the full row of editing tools, which displays "source" as the first button in the top row.

Turn that on, and the rest of the buttons are turned off, which gives you an entry form you can past raw html into.  Click the button off to see the result.  You can easily switch back and forth by clicking the button.

I tend to leave it set to on, because I'm used to typing in html, but you can always turn it off and use the editing buttons instead whenever you feel like it.

  10. For those interested, Ammo.net has Federal 22LR ammunition available today — 3250 rounds for ~$635. Hurry, supply is limited. They haven't had any available for at least 2 months.

  11. Moderators, my stunning visage has been awaiting moderation for some time. The only thing that would make DP better is getting to see my picture on the page occasionally… If nothing else it will make Bill look younger by comparison.

  12. I approved both of the images, as can now be seen in the comments above.

Bill, is there any way for an administrator to see who has icons waiting for approval? I didn't see anything in the WP admin page, but I didn't check every corner.

UPDATE: It appears there is no good way to quickly see everyone who has an avatar awaiting moderation. I could dive into the database and see what I can see. Bill, drop me a line if you want me to try that.

Attention DP Readers! There is a blue-light special on avatars. Go ahead and put in your image and then leave a comment in OT to let the admins know it’s there.

  13. Sure, Steve, check it out. I’ll root around and see if I can find something.

I think I’m supposed to get an email whenever an image needs moderation – unfortunately, this blog sends me something like 700-1000 requests for moderations of various kinds a day (almost every bit of it spam), so the few legit requests are probably getting lost in the spam trap rush.

  14. Bill, I did not post the Amazon "Kindle" post but somehow it shows up as mine. Not a problem just curious. Also I am currently unable to link or insert media into a post even though it shows up in the library. I also miss the buttons that allow you to link, bold and other common tasks at the top of the new post texr box. They have been missing for me the last 2 days.

  15. Bill, over at emergency-preps, I can't follow any links from the recent posts.

It appears that the urls al have "survivalpreps/" inserted in them.  After I get the error page, I can delete if from the url and it goes through.

But I can't log in using that approach; I get to enter my credentials, but when I click the login button, I get the same error.

  16. So when do we get to put Mann et al in public stocks? Because if this comes to pass, we will have wasted decades and countless millions. Okay, we’ve already done so, but I wonder if the time might have been better spent preparing for the possibility of another Little Ice Age which, by my reckoning, will kill more than half of the world’s population. But hey, I’ve got to go pick up my check from Big Oil. See you later.

  17. Bill, I know you’re looking forward to the Singularity and your Google Glasses. There’s a video game coming out named “Watch Dogs” that operates in that all-connected world. Trailers are up on YouTube that you may enjoy.

  18. Speaking of April Fool's day jokes, I don't think this was meant to be one, yet…:

Obama Proclaims April the Month to Teach Young People ‘How to Budget Responsibly’
