Conn Carroll: What happened to the Golden State? | WashingtonExaminer.com

But it isn’t true anymore. More Americans now emigrate from California to other states than immigrate from other states to California. This exodus has cost California more than 1.5 million residents since 2000. And the reason is simple — the jobs are fleeing first.

Yes, but California’s population has actually grown by several million since 2000: from 33,871,648 to 38,041,430. Why?

Immigration, most of it illegal.

That is a recipe for economic disaster, certainly. But since it is also a recipe for continued Democrat Party dominance, I don’t expect it to change much. The left would rather rule a graveyard than play second banana in paradise.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. I know illegal immigration is a factor, but the bulk of the growth is kids being born to couples too young and too poor to leave the state. That includes kids of illegals, but don’t forget many former illegals were given amnesty in the ’80s, and they were from places where large families are the norm. Too bad nobody mentioned that that would be an inevitable effect of the amnesty before it was imposed. Now, just imagine the future impact of the Obamnesty being planned.
