Let Us Have Gay Marriage, But not Yet – Taki’s Magazine

The problem is that we live in a politically correct police state. Freedom of association has been largely abolished. Freedom of speech is not far behind. Our ruling class makes hardly any new law unless it can be used to subject us to more total control. Regardless of what safeguards on conscience are now promised, I suspect that the Bill before Parliament is the beginning of a process that it is hoped will end in the state control of religion.

We are moving toward this because Christians believe in a source of authority separate from and higher than the state. Until recently, it was the custom of absolute states to make an accommodation with whatever church was largest. In return for being established, the priests would then preach obedience as a religious duty. Modern absolute states, though, are secular. Such were the Jacobin and the Bolshevik tyrannies. Such is our own mild tyranny.

And ours.

What the religious never quite figure out is that if they attempt to impose their beliefs on others via the force of the state, they are, in the view of the state, usurping the proper role of the state, (which reserves the right to make such decisions and impositions for itself) and hence become targets of the very state they attempt to use for their own ends.

I’ve often wondered how religion in America might fare if, rather than worrying about who was having sex with whom, it concentrated more on supporting God-given unalienable individual liberties like the right to keep and bear arms.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. It might make a fun thought piece, to imagine what America would have been like if the Puritans hadn’t lost their war and the colonies used as the dumping ground. Say, if they hadn’t lost power and made way for the restoration of the monarchy. Or if Charles II had been a cast-iron son-of-a-bitch and executed them all. Sure, the earliest batches of Pilgrims had already come here, after having been run out of every place where civilized people lived, but without reinforcements they likely would have died off.

On the other hand, without the attitudes engendered by the Puritans up in New England, would the American Revolution have succeeded? Would it even have gotten started as a somewhat popular movement, or would it have been limited to a few malcontents whose personal oxes were being gored?

  2. I think the Puritan experience in Massachusetts, that resulted in the creation of the separatist colony of Rhode Island, because of the mistake of establishing a state religion (their own, of course) is precisely the lesson learned that resulted in the first amendment.

  3. The revised ten commandments will be posted on the walls of the DNC:
1.) Thou shalt have no other gods before Obama.
2.) Thou shalt not bow down thyself to any graven image for the Lord Obama is jealous god. The democrats will visit iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Obama; And shewing mercy unto thousands illegal immigrants, welfare recipients and minorities that love him and keep his commandments
3.) Thou shalt not take the Lord Obama’s name vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain
4.) Remember the State of the Union address and keep it holy. No days shalt thou labour, so long as there are rich to pick up the tab, and do all thy work: And the seventh day is the day of Golf and the Lord Obama shall play and hallow it.
5.) Honour thy liberal father and thy leftist mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord Obama giveth thee. The other parents can go to hell.
6.) Thou shalt not kill any government person, minority, or liberal or other person unless it is by drone.
7.) Thou shalt not commit adultery if thou art a conservative, a republican or are repugnant to the statists.
8.) Thou shalt not steal; the government will not tolerate competition, (except by the Select.)
9.) Thou shalt not bear arms of any sort unless you are a policeman, or a bodyguard of one of the Chosen.
10,) Thou may covet everything that your rich neighbor has, his house, his wife, his manservant, his maidservant, and his ox, but not his ass, that belongs to Obama

  4. A police state is the goal of religious organizations (churches). If they can’t get willing obedience to the “will of God – i.e. church authorities” they will employ men with guns if they can.

Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. CS Lewis

It is not God they seek. It is wealth and power.

BTW the secular “powers” are not secular. They just promote a different sort of religion. One not based on Gods.
