Pajamas Media » Gunwalker: The ATF’s Kenneth Melson Blows the Whistle on the Justice Department

In a blockbuster development in the Operation Fast & Furious gun-running scandal, Acting ATF Director Kenneth Melson secretly testified before House and Senate investigators on July 4 with his own personal lawyer present, former United States Attorney Richard Cullen, without the knowledge of the ATF or the Department of Justice.

This morning, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa and Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Charles Grassley released a copy of a letter they sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on July 5 about Melson’s testimony. Melson’s revelations raise even more serious issues not only about the operation itself, but about apparent attempts by the Justice Department to mislead Congress on the details of the operation.

And why is this not immediate front-page, top of the hour news all across the country?

Because the Mainly Socialist Media is now in full coverup mode, doing everything it possibly can to protect the man they are deeply and obviously in the tank for, President Barack Obama.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

  1. In addition, if you read a bit between the lines, it now appears entirely plausible that “the fix” is in place…

…with Melson’s testimony, it is also appears that the Justice Department and specifically Deputy Attorney General James Cole have been obstructing Congress and engaging in a cover-up to prevent Congress and the public from finding out just how much the leadership of the Justice Department was involved in this expanding scandal.

It’s still possible, of course, that this can create enough of a splash-over to touch Holder himself – but it seems equally possible that, since the communication between Melson and Cole took place while Cole was still in “acting” Deputy A.G. mode, and that part of the quid pro quo for Issa’s folks getting the access they wanted was that Grassley let Cole’s status as Deputy be confirmed, that Cole will get chopped – along with Melson and some lesser-players – as a “firewall” move to avoid anyone further up the ladder (read: Holder, or even possibly The One himself) being seriously touched by the whole rotten mess and the investigation of it.

If Holder’s office comes out with some sort of portrayal of Cole as a “rogue” (and previously-unconfirmed “acting”) Deputy, even as a “leaked comment” – that will confirm it.

If Issa buys into this sort of scenario, it will also be apparent that a) the dirt quite likely runs all the way to the top, b) there’s still too much evidence floating around that the real principals want to get rid of and c) the whole thing is going to be “tampered” down and buried (with the see-nothing, hear-nothing, do-nothing assistance of the Mainly Slime Monkeys) well in advance of The Obamanation’s hard run at re-election.

  3. Nice letter…unfortunately, there’s nothing there that runs counter to what I described up above.

I really, really hope I’m wrong about that – that, in fact, this is just the slow buildup to what will, indeed, be an even bigger disaster for The Obamanation and his administration than Iran-Contra or even Watergate.

At this point, though, I’ll wait for the contempt citations and/or the indictments to start coming out.
