» 28 minutes to energy independence – Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion

Newt has released a 28 minute video discussing energy independence. (h/t numerous readers)

Via Human Events, the video will be broadcast in key markets, in its entirety. Also, it was done entirely from memory, without aid of notes or a teleprompter.

Big question: Will people watch a 28 minute video?

Not many, would be my guess.

This always gets me. Pundits lament that candidates never talk about issues of substance. And yet when they do, and do so at length, that call the discussions boring, lengthy, and too complicated.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian with conservative leanings on most issues, except on many traditionally conservative social issues, where my stance would be regarded as hopelessly liberal by most social conservatives. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

Way back in the distant past, when I was married the first time, I had a series of books called The Great American Bathroom Book. These were two page synopses or analyses of novels, philosophical points, and other stuff. They had originally been published as Compact Classics or some such, but no one bought them. After the name change, sales of the first volume were good enough to bring forth two more.

I think we need to do something similar with political and economic and technological speeches and briefings and punditry. Hack them down to three minutes or less, to fit into the average dump or the average commercial break. Name the series “Info Dump”. And minimize the head shots of most politicians and economists and techies and pundits. I don’t know about you, but I’d find it off-putting to have Newt staring at me as I took a dump.

Newt seems to be taking the idea from that Clinton/Bush opponent. There was also similar comments in that election cycle about no one watching Pee-rot’s long lecture discussions on T.V. But I believe he actually picked up a lot of support from folks as they watched his info-mercials, or lecture-ads, or whatever they were called.
