One of my great heroes

Winsor “Silas” McCay (1869 –1934) was a cartoonist for the Hearst papers. Dude was enormously prolific and incredibly innovative — his surreal comic strips still stand as some of the best sequential art, ever.

Why is it that the first guys in any new medium are often unsurpassed by the people who follow?

Never heard of the guy. But a quick Google reveals an amazingly talented artist.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian with conservative leanings on most issues, except on many traditionally conservative social issues, where my stance would be regarded as hopelessly liberal by most social conservatives. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

Interesting question. If you use car design as an analogy, there are plenty of people with new ideas, but very few with the talent and determination to see those ideas through, and even fewer willing to risk helping make those ideas a reality. Commercially, there is great risk in trying something new, but if it succeeds, there will be a host of imitators of lesser talent to follow. That 1% innovation – 99% imitation pattern seems to be a human trait, almost like we’re pack animals following the leader.

Do yourself a favor and buy the books as soon as humanly possible. It’s quite possibly the greatest comic strip of all time. Start here:

And then try these: (Update – WTQ)
