Riehl World View: If You Don’t Believe Santorum Is Electable, You Don’t Believe In Conservatism, The GOP, Or Yourself

Well, hm. I think Santorum is electable against Obama. In fact, I think that a syphillitic camel would beat Obama this fall, and my Pomeranian would crush him.

That said, I am a libertarian conservative, and I don’t especially like the social conservatism much favored by many in the GOP. I’m a registered Libertarian, and I think that the Gentry GOP Ruling Class currently controlling the party and its congressional contingents are spineless, gutless, corrupt center-leftists, and I believe in them not at all. As for me, I believe in myself just fine, thanks – to the point that I don’t even need some imaginary, yowling thundergod to celebrate or justify my own existence. Finally, I’m not really very big on “belief” (with its connotation of taking something on faith) as a method of making political decisions.

I favor liberty-minded conservatism and the constitutional mode of republican governance established by our Founders and Framers because it is demonstrably the best design ever set upon this earth for humans to govern themselves with – not because I “believe” in it. I don’t have to have faith because, unlike the lefties and their religious Marxism, I can prove my contentions.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian with conservative leanings on most issues, except on many traditionally conservative social issues, where my stance would be regarded as hopelessly liberal by most social conservatives. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

This reminds me of how corruptible our language is. In the late ‘50s and early ‘60s I referred to myself as a liberal republican—not a conservative. Now those same beliefs and orientation makes me a libertarian conservative. (Fiscal conservatism, reliance on the markets for solutions where possible, small government, strong defense, self-reliance, appropriate safety net for the less fortunate, and expanding liberties.)
In the 60’s I was a member of a Baptist church. The church approved of the ban on prayer in school. Our national organization voted to support abortion rights for women. Later the regional association split into two groups because part of the association wanted to ordain gay ministers and approved of gay marriages. The other half was adamantly opposed.
So with that history, you can see why I have such antipathy toward the misnamed social-conservatives.
I can vote for one, but only if his primary orientation is toward my old libertarian/liberal/anti-socialist ideals.

    Too kind.

Tar and feathers won’t work on this crowd.

“On me, it looks good! Besides, everyone I know is dressed this way!”
