Retaking the Senate the Old Fashioned Way – One Seat At A Time

» Bob Kerrey will not run for Senate – Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion

As you know, Ben Nelson decided not to run for reelection in Nebraska.  His Cornhusker Kickback weighed to heavily on his reelection prospects.

Don’t listen to the hacks and flacks who are telling you that Obama is favored to win re-election, and that the Dems have a good shot at retaking the House. Just take a look at what real politicians are doing out in the real world.

Count this as a guaranteed pickup for the GOP.

About Bill Quick

I am a small-l libertarian with conservative leanings on most issues, except on many traditionally conservative social issues, where my stance would be regarded as hopelessly liberal by most social conservatives. My primary concern is to increase individual liberty as much as possible in the face of statist efforts to restrict it from both the right and the left. If I had to sum up my beliefs as concisely as possible, I would say, "Stay out of my wallet and my bedroom," "your liberty stops at my nose," and "don't tread on me." I will believe that things are taking a turn for the better in America when married gays are able to, and do, maintain large arsenals of automatic weapons, and tax collectors are, and do, not.

A guaranteed pickup for the GOP means very little if it’s just another establishment RINO. Who’s the GOP candidate and how bad does he/she suck?

  2. Bill Quick says:

Okay, Kyle, look: We’re doomed. Is that what you want my approach to be?

So, I guess I should close down Daily Pundit and maybe start a cat blog or something?

I can assure you, there are times I’ve been sorely tempted….

    Maybe this will help, Kyle:

    1) Not all “establishment RINOs” are required to stay that way. Some, it’s true, are effectively Democrap-Lite from the get-go, and stay that way forevah – however, there are always some who are “open to reason”; i.e., can be “persuaded” – by one means or another ( ) – to get with the program.

    2) Sometimes, in the “down-ticket” races, you take what you can get – especially if the guy/gal is going to be counted, even just some of the time, as sincerely being about that “R” after his/her name on the rolls. It’s all about the numbers, y’know?

    3) Some CongressVarmints are weathervanes – they’ll swing whichever way the winds are blowing. It’s just the way they are. Again – you’ve got to have the numbers if you want to generate those winds.

That’s part of why each Party has a guy designated as “Whip” – to help to try to “whip” the foot-draggers into making (however reluctantly or occasionally) the needed votes.

Who’s the GOP candidate and how bad does he/she suck?

Go and read up on it, and judge for yourself.

Meanwhile…like the man says, one step seat at a time. There’re lots of similes: You eat an elephant (or, in this case, a donkey jackass) one bite at a time, etc., etc…

Keep on keepin’ on – let’s make ol’ Hairy Weed drip hot, li’l tears of bitter defeat from those ugly, squinchy eyes of his.

No, Bill, I don’t want you to shut down DP… I’m not a fan of cat blogs. The point I was trying, somewhat ineptly, to express is that if this is a guaranteed GOP pick-up we should try to ensure that the person who picks it up is as good as possible.

According to Ballotpedia there are currently five candidates in the GOP primary for the seat: Jon Bruning, Deb Fischer, Pat Flynn, Don Stenberg and Spencer Zimmerman. Of these it looks like Bruning and Stenberg are the more serious/professional candidates; both of them hold statewide office already. Bruning is the current Attorney General of Nebraska and Stenberg is the current Treasurer of Nebraska. Fischer is a state senator and the other two are private citizens.

Looking at their respective campaign sites I see a few warning flags on Bruning’s. He wants to “repeal and replace” ObamaCare, for example, while Stenberg just wants to repeal it. Stenberg seems to take a stronger line generally.

Noooooooo. Especially considering the culinary posts…

Yeah, that was my strategy with the GOP primaries, too. Isn’t turning out so well.

Maybe a cat blog with the occasional cooking post?

  7. Kyle Haight says:

It hasn’t worked out with the presidential primary, largely because all the not-Romneys who chose to run turned out to be fatally flawed in various ways. That doesn’t make the Senate and House primaries a lost cause. This isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon.

Are you aware of the Campaign for Primary Accountability?

For a cat blog you should own a cat not a Pomeranian. It will have to be a dog blog with the occasional cooking, firearms, biking post.

Here’s a cat post for you. OK, I’ll start you off easy. It’ll be a cats and dogs post.

My best friend (I’ve known him since I was 3) lost his small cat today. He’s had dogs all his life, and is more of a dog person than a cat person, but he will take in a cat that needs a home.

I accidentally smacked my cat right in the face today. She was sneaking up on a plate of food. I swung out at her, sure that she would jump back, but she didn’t. Of course, then she ran away, and later, sat looking at me for a long time, re-evaluating whether she could trust me. She had done the same thing when I accidentally stepped on her.

I apologized, if such a thing is possible with a cat. She seems over it now.

Meanwhile, I have found that if you like massive hair shedding, a Lab is a good dog to have. I use one of those shedding combs outside, but she still drops a lot of hair in the house.

Phooey. Every conceivable GOP candidate is “fatally flawed” in some way.

Romney is nothing but fatal flaws. He’s far more flawed than any possible other candidate the GOP can come up with, including all the gutless wonders who declined to run. And yet he seems to be gliding to the nomination.

I said from the very beginning that since the GOP could not lose to Barack Obama, it didn’t matter who it nominated, so the job was to pick the best liberty minded conservative available.

The GOP simply could not, and apparently can not, do that. Therefore, the GOP is no longer useful to liberty minded conservatives.
